The Stone Roses 1989.02.27 @ Haçienda Manchester

There were many great gigs at the Haçienda in it's history, New Order and the Smiths in 1982/3, Gene Loves Jezebel! (I know but we all have those secrets!), Nico from the Velvet Underground - sheer beauty and class (I fell for her that night as we sat on the dancefloor mesmirised by her sultry voice) and then there was the Stone Roses to name but a handful.

This night at the Haçienda was something meaningful.  Can you believe that this gig happened nearly 25 years ago!  A temporary shift from the pounding deep beats that dominated the Haçienda around 1989 to bring you an experience that defined the Manchester sound.  'All the colours fade' was brought to us by the Roses, energy attitude and utter brilliance.  We went home meaningfully singing 'Adored' and 'I Am the Ressurection' buzzing excitedly for later that week when I was to DJ for the Roses at Warrington Legends!  I thought I had arrived! DJ'ing for the Roses!  To be honest, my memory of it was they didn't sound that good... what they were though was utterly brilliant.  The Roses dominated and filled the dancefloor, a baggy swagger of attitude and of get up and show the world how to do it - and they did! Great stuff, great memories, and a reflection of the greatest club in the world.  Faç51 the Haçienda.

I thought I would upload a new set today in memory of Tony Wilson who would have been celebrating his birthday today.  Sadly this was not to be.  Without Tony this set would never have happened and certainly this Blog would have never existed.  Love him or loath him Tony lives through ever word of this Blog and believe me he is missed.  Happy Birthday Tony, a star shines bright for you tonight!

Dave Booth 1990.12.21 @ Haçienda Manchester - The Mix

The Haçienda was not just about Dance Music.  DJ's like Dave Booth and Dave Haslem championed alternative music in it's various guises.  By 1989 /1990 Indie had taken on a new energy, the Madchester sound meant the worlds eye turned on Manchester with renewed vigour. Applications to Manchesters' Universities soared out the roof and and the buzz word everywhere was the Haçienda.  Queues formed stretching around the block and away over the Rochdale Canal.  The buzz in that queue was electric and solely to experience that hallowed dancefloor.

Manchester took on a 'baggy' persona.  Indie kids took dance and merged the it with a new indie dance sound.  Guitars were mixed with the hedonistic dance beats that had engulfed the city.   Gone now was a trivial rivalry, indie is better than dance, no dance is better than indie!  What bands like the 'Inspiral Carpets', the 'Happy Mondays' and Stone Roses did was shake it all up and all took prominence over the city and beyond - through attitude and style.  Manchester had emerged as world leaders in popular and alternative music once again, attacking the world on all fronts showing everyone how it was done.  The immortal words 'And On The Eighth Day God Created Manchester' never rang more true!! The phrase still gives me a buzz to this day.

For me, there is something romantic about that city.  Manchester.  It stands alone, never follows.  For me it is a romantic place, it has an energy like no other city.  You can see the beat / the pulse of the place in the faces of it's people and buildings, harsh, worn, relentless, weather battered like the rainy streets, you can see the life lived in the faces of everyone.  It is a hard place, unforgiving with years of industrial drive and dominance and when that went it led the world in computers and new technologies.  Its industrial architecture and postmodern influences, Ben Kelly, Peter Saville taking the past and giving the world the future... a discotheque designed from a boat warehouse, you would never have thought it!    And when you think Manchester is totally unforgiving, someone looks you in the eye and smiles, and somehow that place is the most beautiful place on earth.  I love the pulse of that city and I am glad I experienced it as I did.

The set available to download is an example of what Manchester was about at the time.  World dominance in music.  The mix, a night of indie dance replaced Friday nights 'Nude' night from October in a bid to ease the tension that was building from more underground elements.  However it took nothing away from the appeal of the place.  Up beat underground house blended with indie dance cuts creating its own style and aural pleasure.  In the words of primal scream 'We wanna be free to do what we wanna do, And we wanna get loaded And we wanna have a good time, That's what we're gonna do - and that's exactly what we did..... kind of sums it up really!

Thanks to Dave Booth... you led the way fella!

Nick Arrojo & Laurent Garnier 1990.09.01 @ Haçienda Manchester - Wide

Two new DJ's to BLOG51 for you to experience.  Nick Arrojo and Laurent Garnier played a set together on a few occassions. If I recall correctly and that is doubtful! Nick and Laurent stood in for Mike Pickering and Graeme Park were off on the Haçienda American Tour and then hung around a bit after....  I had the pleasure to meet Laurent for a week and hear him play in Ibiza at a few event such as Re-Live the Dream nights mentioned earlier in the blog.  Laurent and Sasha tore up that Isalnd that week keeping the European DJ's well and truely off the decks.   Laurent is probably one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. A real friendly guy.  From France but he was an adopted Manc for sure.  This set is excellent with tunes from ASMO ' Jam the Dance, Expansions 'Move Your Body' and US classics such as Mr Fingers 'Can U Feel It'.

Jon Da Silva 1991.01.09 @ Haçienda Manchester - Void

1991 What a year for clubbing.  Her Majesties finest had all but driven out the raves and clubland was ripe for a bunch of hyped up kids looking to let loose on the nations dance floors.  How we ever managed in a club that shut at 2.00 am i will never know!  I mean essentially we had 4 hours of clubbing! 4 hours flew by and then it would be whats on at the kitchens in Hulme? is anyone having a party? Or is it home to chill?  Unbelievable - I mean it all seems so antiquated now, clubs closing at 2.00am!! 4 hours to have a drink and let your disco shoes get covered in disco sludge!  God how lucky we were to have these 4 hours with a set like this one!

Anyway back to the clubbing, Jon Da Silva's infamous Wednesday nights were a heady mixture of Italian, UK and US house cuts. I used to really love them Wednesday nights!   I asked Jon once about a track he played, I had heard him champion this track week in week out and I needed to know what it was.  So I knocked on the door of the booth, fair play to him - he answered, told me the name and carried on mixing!  Could I remember the name of the tune - correct - no! Them were the days!  Oh yeah, this set represents such a set, a typical Wednesday evening in the Haçienda.

Stomping Piano cuts such as Off Shore's 'I Can't Take the Power', MCJ's 'To Yourself be Free' cut up with N Joi's classic 'Anthem' (I can ear the piano intro now - dun dun dun - I'm in love with you....) Circuit's 'Shelter Me' a lovely slice of 'housey' vocal and then US classics such as Rickster's 'Night Moves' and Inner City's 'Big Fun'.  these tracks alone paint a picture of quality in one 90 minute set! I'd sell my Gran for the other 3 and a half hours!   But wait for it... top these tracks off with Annette's 'Dream 17' a huge Haçienda track, booming baselines and simple vocals (I had a shiver down my spine at the thought); Kariya 'Let Me Love You For Tonight' (again the baseline is giving me goosebumps) a slow groove that has the hugest pumping bass sound when it kicks in ( am definitely feeling that rush now!) and Alison Limerick's 'Where Love Lives'.  A Haç head could not ask for more. Superb stuff.

Download, turn up the system and party.... You know you want to!!  Enjoy!

Graeme Park 1992.07.11 @ Haçienda Manchester

Back to 1992 and a true Haçienda set.  This little beauty captures that summer feel at the Hacienda, pounding basslines, excellent vocals and deep house grrooves.  Never heard or seen the last track as heard on side B before - is it an instrumental of Eleanor Mills - Mr Right (Superb Parkside Mix) or is it a one off mix?  If you know give me a shout! I need to buy this!

These nights around 1992 were probably amongst the best heard at the Haçienda.  Graeme had perfected a sound for sure and tore down on us with blistering bassline after bassline as H.O.U.S.E should be... It is also a momento of a Birthday celebration that night - Hope you can remember the set Col!! Kickin!
